This Is Why We Go

0

ACTUALLY, IT'S NOT ABOUT US

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
—Galatians 6:10

It’s about you. About the community, what the Apostle Paul called “the household of faith.” In these challenging times, the more divided we become the more we realize how much we all need one another, and how everyone needs Jesus. Beyond the moral imperatives of personal salvation, the church was created to be an anchor for humanity in order to reveal God’s truth and Christ’s love to everyone. Emmanuel’s mission is to be that anchor, to be, as the bible puts it, “a house for all nations.” There is love, here. There is hope, here. A new life and new beginning in Jesus Christ freely given to everyone who accepts it—you, me, mama ‘nem—erbody.

EMMANUEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

is one of the most Influential churches in Colorado Springs. Emmanuel's vision encompasses a progressive and wide-ranging doctrine, stressing spiritual and personal growth, arts and humanities, and compassionate community outreach. Under the leadership of the church's Senior Pastor, The Reverend Cleveland A. Thompson, Emmanuel has evolved into the model of progressive thinking within the traditional African American Baptist church.

In addition to a professional-grade music program, Emmanuel supports an aggressive array of growth and support ministries, including a proactive AIDS ministry, Habitat For Humanity, Share Colorado, Prison Fellowship and other outreach ministries. Forging ahead into this new millennium, Emmanuel continues to set new standards of excellence in ministry.

THE SHEPHERD

Emmanuel's Senior Pastor is a soft-spoken professional soldier whose fierce oratory belies a disarmingly self-effacing Southern Gentleman's demeanor. Cleveland Thompson is a teacher, a counselor, a friend and brother, one of the most beloved leaders of the Emmanuel family. Pastor Thompson's inspired and patient leadership has earned him the trust and respect of the Emmanuel family and the community at large

Humor is typically the tip of his sword, along with universal, real-world applications of biblical precepts that help reveal truth and God’s saving grace to us in new ways.

“Can I say ‘hell’ in here?” Thompson facetiously inquires of a neighboring church, the congregation convulsing in stitches, the pastor having put on his drawl again. “There are some things don’t no nice words describe!”

His down-home color and rapier wit cuts across boundaries of race, gender and social status. The pastor disarms his listeners with contextual applications of God’s truth which, in turn, position the listener to hear as the teaching goes forward. The net effect is disarming and effective: a singular and unique voice proclaiming truths both eternal and infallible. “Miracles often happen in quiet spaces,” Thompson was quoted his first Christmas as pastor. “Not in the glare of celebrity or even in the comfort of luxury. But among the poor and desperate. Among the homeless, in a garage, in the cold. David asked, ‘Who is this King of glory?’”

“Before the airline would allow me to travel from point A to point B, I first had to take responsibility for my own bag,” Reverend Thompson said, preaching that morning about discipleship and personal accountability, jabbing a cautionary finger at his Emmanuel family, “Check your bags.”

BE COMPLETELY HUMBLE AND GENTLE...

be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. —Ephesians Chapter 4
